In the rapidly expanding landscape of the Internet of Things (IoT), ensuring data integrity within resource-constrained environments remains a critical challenge. Traditional security implementations often oscillate between computationally expensive encryption standards (such as RSA or AES), which introduce unacceptable latency for edge devices, and amateur "security by obscurity" techniques that fail to adhere to Kerckhoffs’s principle. This paper introduces L-DIAP (Lightweight Data Integrity & Authentication Protocol), a novel cryptographic framework designed to guarantee immutable data verification for distributed sensor networks. +3 Unlike legacy systems that rely on reversible obfuscation methods like ROT13 or simple hashing, L-DIAP leverages a Hash-based Message Authentication Code (HMAC-SHA256) architecture fortified with Dynamic Salting and Synchronized Time-stamping. This hybrid approach ensures that every data packet generates a unique, non-replicable cryptographic signature, effectively mitigating common vulnerabilities such as Rainbow Table incursions, Man-in-the-Middle (MitM) attacks, and Replay attacks. +1 The proposed protocol was simulated using a Python-based prototype to evaluate its efficacy in preventing unauthorized data manipulation in real-time. Results indicate that L-DIAP provides a mathematically proven layer of authenticity and integrity with significantly lower computational overhead compared to asymmetric encryption. This research offers a scalable, industry-standard solution for securing high-frequency data streams in decentralized systems, moving beyond the theoretical limitations of proprietary hashing algorithms.

Context and Problem StatementOne of the most critical challenges facing the modern world is the scarcity of raw resources coupled with the increasing volume of waste. While traditional educational methods—such as seminars and posters—are employed to instill a recycling consciousness, these approaches are inefficient; it is estimated that establishing a societal recycling culture through education alone would take approximately 40 years. Given the rapid depletion of global resources, this timeline is unsustainable. This project proposes that financial motivation, rather than purely moral obligation, is the key to accelerating behavioral change. Proposed Solution and MethodologyThis study presents the design and implementation of a smart, autonomous recycling bin that integrates Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Machine Learning. The system is designed to identify, verify, and sort waste materials—specifically plastics, glass, and waste oils—while offering immediate financial rewards to users via a digital payment infrastructure. The hardware architecture includes two distinct configurations to optimize cost and performance: Cloud-Based Model: A cost-effective version utilizing Raspberry Pi 3 or 4, designed for institutions like schools, where visual data is processed via external servers. Edge-Computing Model: A high-performance version utilizing powerful processors (Raspberry Pi 5 or Jetson Nano) capable of on-device processing, designed for high-traffic public areas. Technical MechanismThe system utilizes a multi-sensor fusion approach for precise waste validation. A camera system employs computer vision and deep learning algorithms to detect objects and prevent fraud, ensuring the deposited item matches the selected category. Supplemental sensors, including load cells for solid mass and conductivity/flow sensors for liquids, measure the exact quantity of the waste. Inside the unit, stepper motors divert waste to the correct compartments, while an electric cylinder press mechanism compresses solid waste to maximize storage capacity. Economic Model and ImpactThe project establishes a direct economic link between the user and the recycling factory, bypassing traditional intermediaries. By treating waste as a tradable commodity, the system generates revenue through the sale of pre-sorted materials, covering its own operational costs (electricity, server maintenance) while generating net profit. The primary objective is to condense the cultural adoption of recycling from 40 years to just 5 years by leveraging financial incentives and user-friendly technology.
